Auxiliary House is a cozy, two-story home located in Bethesda, Maryland, near local medical facilities and downtown Washington. Our assisted living home offers a unique setting where residents in the early to moderate stages of dementia receive cognitive support while enjoying the independence of traditional senior living.

The home contains a living room, dining room and sitting area. Additionally, we assist residents with daily living activities, including dressing and bathing, schedule visits from health care personnel for needed medical care and offer support services, such as housekeeping, laundry and medication management.

Our trained staff members also help residents engage in stimulating activities to maintain cognitive functions. We develop a short biography for each senior upon admission, documenting their life stories, talents and hobbies, to tailor services and activities to individual needs and preferences.

Assisted Living Care and Services at Cedar Creek

As people age, they may struggle to perform personal care or household tasks alone. At our assisted living facilities, we help Maryland residents maintain their independence and quality of life longer with a range of daily living services and 24-hour trained staff. Services provided include:

  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance
  • Personal care services, including dressing, bathing and grooming
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Daily meals

These services are included in our assisted living costs, allowing residents to receive needed support to maximize comfort and safety. Because we offer multiple senior living communities, residents can access higher levels of care as needed without moving to a new facility.

Memory Care: A Core Aspect of Our Assisted Living Facility

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans live with cognitive impairments. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia affect brain functions, making it difficult for individuals to process new information and live alone safely. This is why memory care forms a core aspect of our assisted living communities.

Our primary goal is to improve quality of life by helping residents maintain cognitive functions and reduce symptoms associated with dementia, including confusion and anxiety. We utilize a range of specialized care strategies to accomplish this, such as music therapy and daily exercise. Additionally, we encourage engagement through group activities and by helping residents explore new interests or revive past hobbies.

Through our specialized dining services, we also help seniors maintain physical health and nutrition, with three daily home-cooked meals and snacks catering to personal preferences and dietary restrictions. We encourage residents to participate in mealtime preparation and other household tasks, depending on capabilities, to help them stay productive and feel a sense of achievement.

Life at Cedar Creek: Personal Care and Independence

Cedar Creek’s senior care communities offer high staff-to-resident ratios and comforting, homelike environments, providing safe spaces for older adults to receive services to maintain independent living. Our assisted living scope of care ranges from basic daily living assistance to person-centered dementia care, ensuring resident needs are met at every level.

Seniors start their days with personalized attention from a trained staff member, receiving help with tasks including bathing or dressing before venturing to the communal dining room for breakfast. In between meals, they participate in activities such as games, crafts, gardening or music, depending on interests, to stay active and connect with peers.

We also schedule appointments with visiting health care providers, such as physicians, therapists or dentists, to help residents maintain physical health and well-being. Additionally, our community routinely plans special events, including holiday celebrations, live music. This combination of daily living support, medical care and social activity serves to foster healthy, fulfilling lifestyles, no matter what level of care is needed.

The Importance of Family Involvement in Assisted Living

Moving to a new environment can be daunting, especially for someone with memory loss. Familiar faces, items and routines can reduce stress and enhance comfort, helping seniors in assisted living relax and more easily adjust to their new setting. To ease the transition, we encourage families to visit often and bring their loved ones’ personal belongings to infuse a sense of familiarity into their private rooms.

Additionally, we allow family members to bring in special foods their loved one enjoys to make mealtimes more soothing. Family members can also provide valuable information about residents’ likes, dislikes and preferences if they aren’t able to themselves, allowing us to administer more effective, personalized care.
